FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Fatima Allotey: Surgery

Surgery No. 1, 2005
April 26 - May 28, 2005
Florence Lynch Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of
recent works by Fatima Allotey. The exhibition is on view from
April 26 to May 28, 2005.
For this exhibition Allotey continues her discourse with the "self,"
initiated in her last exhibition in 2001. The current show includes a
series of drawings, photographs and sculptures
all of which are
in a chirurgical artist/object dialogue. Allotey had surgery on an
injured finger, a procedure considered non-intrusive, left her
traumatized for nearly a year. Left with a row of stitches closely
resembling staples, the artist started to work on a series of drawings
which later led to the sculptures and photographs wherein she
manipulated various food elements by turning them into hybrids and
by-products of what they were originally. Allotey internalize every life
experience, whether positive or negative, major or minor into her work
and the result is one of lamenting imagery, simple and clever.
Fatima Allotey is one of Africa’s most challenging and interesting
young artists. Born in Accra, she studied at the Art Academy in
Barcelona. Her studies completed, she remained in Europe for a few year
with Barcelona as her base. She had her first exhibition in 2001 and has
since participated in many international exhibitions and Biennales. In
2004 she returned to Accra where she lives and works.
Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 to 6:00 p.m..
