Theresa Hackett: More Ground to Cover

September 9 through October 9, 2004

Florence Lynch Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent works by New York-based artist Theresa Hackett. The exhibition is on view from September 9 through October 9, 2004. An opening reception will be held at the gallery on Thursday, September 9 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

More Ground to Cover includes three large-scale and two mid-sized mixed media paintings utilizing materials such as Flashe paint, color pencil, foil, tape and maps on paper on linen. The works are dense, textural orchestrations of shape and color, evoking the familiar information we encounter both in the physical and representational landscape around us. The introduction of found topographical maps contributes yet another layer of dialogue. Her rich visceral treatment of her surface using color pencil, Flashe paint, foil and ballpoint pen further intensifies this overall aesthetic and experiential philosophy.

"Although I do not intentionally address issues of geopolitical and ecological concerns, my work gravitates towards making what becomes relevant in one’s daily life". References to landscape function primarily as metaphor, reworked until, as Hackett phrases it, the "land escapes itself". The breaking apart and re-formation of structure and shape evokes a post-apocalyptic vision. These readings are the unintentional results of the greater material and compositional dialogue that concern Hackett’s philosophical inquiry. Ultimately, the goal in these works is to continue pushing the limits of conventional painting and further blend the languages of abstraction and pastoral landscape.

Born in Los Angeles, California, Theresa Hackett lives and works in New York City.

Theresa Hackett has shown in New York, Los Angeles, Ohio and Internationally. Her work is included in several private and public collections.

Jeanne Susplugas: Ordinary Landscapes.

This series of three photographic landscapes is part of a larger ongoing reflection upon the fantastic and enigmatic worlds where the human figure is missing. Susplugas’s contemplation utilizes macro-photography as a magnifying glass, delving into the hidden beauty of familiar things.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 to 6:00 p.m. For further information and visual material, please contact Steven Rose at 212-924-3290.
