Noritoshi Hirakawa

Leafing through Matters, the monograph of Noritoshi Hirakawa's black and white photographs published in 1998 by Deitch Projects, one never knows what to expect when one turns the page:  a Tokyo street scene, a pile of potatoes, a man groping beneath a woman's skirt, a pile of excrement, a waterfall, a New York street scene.  His images range from the mysterious to the obvious, the erotic to the mundane - and never fail to surprise.

Hirakawa has shown  at Deitch Projects, New York; Gabriele River, Cologne; Galerie Emmanual Perotin, Paris; Wako Works of Art, Tokyo; Zeno X Gallery, Antwerp; Galerie d'Endt, Amsterdam; Florence Lynch Gallery, New York; and many other galleries and museums worldwide.
