Christa MaiwaldChrista Maiwald began her career
in New York as a video artist in the 1970s. She had solo exhibitions at most major
video venues, including the Whitney Museum, Franklin Furnace and Anthology Film Archives,
and received numerous grants, including two each from the National Endowment for the Arts
and the New York State Council on the Arts.
More recently she has turned
to painting, sculpture and works on paper. Her latest series, represented by three
of the works below, is titled East/West and uses Asian art in general and
Japanese origami in particular as its primary influences. Like most of
Maiwald's work, these pieces mix the obvious and the ineffable, the Pop and the
painterly, the laugh and the leer. Her most recent solo shows have been at the
Wainscott Gallery in East Hampton, NY, where the artist lives, and at the Florence Lynch
Gallery in New York.
